HL- 11 VILCABAMBA RANGE
(15 Days / 14 Nights)

A magical and the most complete hike which requires a lot of experience the route combines snowy peaks and lush tropical cloud forest and highland and archaeological sites and original Inca Trails. In this hard and adventurous expedition over long abandoned Incan Roads off the bitten paths, climbing high passes and exploring the rich high cloud forest we get to Choquequirao (cradle of gold) a lost city that was one of the last refuges of the Incas in times of the conquest and fascinated 19th century explorers like Hiram Bingham who visited it two years before he discovered Machu Picchu. Ñusta Hispana and Rosas Pata important and interesting archaeological Incan remains destroyed during the 16th century breathtaking sceneries, from arid slopes to dense forest – watched over always by soaring snow wreathed peaks. Taste of exploration in one of Peru’s remotest mountain regions.

 
ITINERARY
 DAY 1: Cusco- Huancacalle

Early in the morning a scenic bus ride of about 8 hours brings us to the village of Huancacalle (2,800m/9,200ft.), where we camp and meet up with our wranglers. In this long bus ride we observe beautiful sceneries crossing different valleys and getting to altitudes between 2,000m/6,560ft to 4,200m/13,800ft. (L/D)

 DAY 2: Huancacalle-Choquetacarpo

After breakfast we begin our hike with the visit of the archaeological sites of Vitcos, Rosas Pata and Ñusta Hispana, Incan remains where from Manco Inca tried to defend the empire during the 16th century. The trail ascends on an easy path to Choquetacarpo which is our camp site at 3,690m/12,100ft. (B/L/D)

 DAY 3: Choquetacarpo-Quelcamachay

In the morning the trail ascents until we get to an original Inca trail getting to Choquetacarpo Pass at 4,480m/14,700ft from where we see beautiful scenery of indigenous Queuña trees and snowcapped mountains. We start descending until we get to the valley where we have lunch a deserve rest after lunch to start again walking until we get to Quelcamachay at 3,878m/12,700ft.

 DAY 4: Quelcamachay-Paqchaq

Today becomes a long day and a long walk we cross two passes. After breakfast early in the morning we start walking ascending the valley of lush vegetation of Queuña trees until we get to our first Pass at 4,065m/13,350ft breathtaking sceneries of the valley, Pumasillos range with their amazing snowcapped mountains after some rest we start walking down hill to the valley where we have a delicious lunch. After lunch and a repair rest we start ascending the path turns steep surrounded of yellow dry grass to the second Pass at 4,150m/13,615ft the view again is amazing and breathtaking a closer spot of Pumasillos snowcapped mountains, waterfalls and we can already see the camp site down below. Way to the camp the path turns bit slip because of the dry grass. Arrive to the camp at Paqchaq (3,740m/12,270ft). 

 DAY 5: Paqchaq

Today is a rest day. After breakfast an optional half day walk to the Pumasillos Mountains takes us through amazing giant Lupine vegetation.

 DAY 6: Paqchaq-Minas Victoria

After a fortifying breakfast we start ascending to Yanama Pass at 4,065m/13,350ft a stony pathway takes us down to Yanama village where we can visit the school and have some rest. A few more minutes walk to have lunch. After lunch we ascent to Mina Victoria Pass at 4,090m/13,400ft astonishing landscapes we start descending to our camp site at 3,860m/12,660ft.

 DAY 7: Minas Victoria-Pinchaunuyoc

Today we descent a long way down to the bottom of the mountain to reach the Yuracmayo River (1,900m/6,250ft) where we can refresh ourselves during our lunch break. Then we ascent to the archaeological site of Pinchaunuyoc still covered by vegetation where we camp at 2,640m/8,660ft.

 DAY 8: Pinchaunuyoc- Choquequirao -Pinchaunuyoc

After a fortifying breakfast we start hiking in the morning. A short but steep climb brings us up to the ridge from where we have a panoramic view of Choquequirao and the Apurimac canyon below (3,400m/11,150ft). A 1 hour descent leads us to the archaeological site of Choquequirao with luck we may get the latest news regarding discoveries, excavations, cleaning and restoration process from the archaeologists of COPESCO working on site. From the highest point, El Usno, we can enjoy a breathtaking sunset over the magical Apurimac canyon and with luck a majestic condor may pass by. After lunch we return to Pinchaunuyoc.

 DAY 9: Pinchaunuyoc-Mina Victoria

After breakfast we start hiking very early in the morning we have a long distance ahead of us a dusty descent to Yuracmayo River to go on a steep climb brings us to our camp at Mina Victoria (3,860m/12,660ft).

 DAY 10: Mina Victoria-Quiswarpampa

Today we have a short distance to reach Mina Victoria Pass we can enjoy again fantastic views of the surrounding snow peaks we continue our hike with a 2 hour descent, passing some abandoned silver mines (narrow paths with sheer drops) until we reach the community of Yanama. From here it's a gentle climb to our campsite at Quiswarpampa (4,000m/13,100ft.)

 DAY 11: Quiswarpampa

Today is a rest day. After breakfast an optional climbing to Rumiorco Mountain at 5,000m/16,400ft from where we have an astonishing view of the surrounding valleys.

 DAY 12: Quiswarpampa-Colpapampa

Today we hike amid snowy peaks; climbing up to Yanama Pass (4,650m/15,300ft) chance to view condors after we spend some time enjoying the fantastic scenery over the Pass we continue to Totora where we have lunch. In the afternoon we start our descent towards high cloud forest, arriving to the camp at Colpapampa (2,880mts/9,450ft).

 DAY 13: Colpapampa-Wayracmachay
A short and an easy walk ascents to Wayracmachay 3,800m/12,470ft along the way we enjoy the many varieties of orchids and vegetation.
 DAY 14: Wayracmachay-Soraypampa

After a delicious breakfast we ascent up to Salkantay Pass (4,525m/15,000ft), enjoying great views onto the surrounding glaciers. We descent until we arrive to our camp site at Soraypampa. Prepare for a cold night.

 DAY 15: Soraypampa-Mollepata-Cusco

Early in the morning we walk approximately 5 hours to Mollepata town. After lunch and a rest we say goodbye to the wranglers and continue by bus towards Cusco. We arrive back in Cusco just in time for a shower and some night activities.
